Protective Headgear Causes Controversy in Girls’ Soccer
Given the growing concussion crisis in girls’ soccer, some families are choosing to purchase their children with headgear that claims to prevent concussions. Experts are questioning whether said headgear gives athletes and their families a false sense of security. For more information, click here to view the full report from NBC’s “Rock Center.”

The NBC story was ridiculous for several reasons. First, they focused on a girl named Natasha who had six concussions before wearing headgear, then apparently several more wearing headgear. Obviously, the risk of getting a concussions goes up after a concussion and no product can eliminate or prevent all concussions. There is now a law named “Natasha’s Law” in Texas, yes named after the girl in the NBC segment, that requires parents and their doctor to sign releases allowing the child to return to play. That was the real story, not the fact that she was able to get a concussion wearing headgear.
The doctor featured in the show failed to mention the two peer-reviewed studies on the effectivenss of protective headgear, one of which concluded those not wearing the headgear suffered 2.65 times as many concussions.
