This video of a virtual ventriculostomy demonstrates examples of both an incorrect cannulation and a correct cannulation of the cerebral ventricles, using a high-fidelity 3D simulator with haptic feedback and electromagnetic head tracking of the operator. The advantages of a simulator are evident in this video: immediate feedback, repeatability and development of procedural skills without exposing patients to the steepest part of the learning curve. This ventriculostomy simulator has been part of the annual AANS Top Gun competition and has served to promote the use of surgical simulation in neurosurgery, as well as to expose neurosurgeons to the future of surgical training and education.
