Study Finds Spine Surgery Patients Are Low in Vitamin D

Many patients undergoing spine surgery have low levels of vitamin D, which may delay their recovery, according to new research.

In a study of 313 patients undergoing spinal fusion surgery, orthopaedic surgeons at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis discovered that more than half the participants had inadequate levels of vitamin D. Additionally, one-fourth of the patients were more severely deficient. For more study results, click here to read full release.

I think that it is quite likely that the 25(OH)D status of the patients is actually indicative of the vitamin D status general population in that area or only slightly more deficient. It is a pity that the determination of the vitamin D status of a patient is not yet routine.
