Fat Linked to Memory Loss in Study
Individuals with abnormal fat metabolism and high levels of abdominal fat are over three times more likely to develop dementia and memory loss later in life, according to a study conducted by neurological scientists at the Rush University Medical Center and the National Institutes of Health. Findings revealed that the same protein that controls fat metabolism in the liver also is found in the hippocampus, the region of the brain that controls memory and learning.
“We need to better understand how fat is connected to memory and learning so that we can develop effective approach to protect memory and learning,” said Kalipada Pahan, PhD, professor of neurology at Rush University Medical Center. Click here to read the full article.
