Magnetic Stimulation of the Brain May Aid in Recovery of Certain Stroke Patients
Magnetic stimulation of the nerve cells in the brain may speed up recovery from hemispatial neglect, a condition in which patients wake up and are unable to see or recognize anything on the left side of their bodies, according to a new study. The findings were published in the Dec. 13 issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.
Hemispatial neglect is common after a stroke that occurs on the right side of the brain. The current treatment for the condition involves attention and concentration training using computer and pencil-and-paper tasks, which is inadequate, according to researchers.
